A vocabulary of six lines and two dots

Stik, who signs his work STIK, is a British graffiti and street artist based in London. Born in 1979, he had no formal art school training and built his practice on the walls of the city rather than in a studio. His signature figure is reduced to the smallest possible quantity of information: six lines for the body and two dots for the eyes. Everything a viewer reads into the character, its mood, its posture, its relationship to whoever stands beside it, comes from tiny adjustments to the angle of a shoulder or the spacing of the eyes.

That economy is deliberate rather than naive. It draws on the time he spent in Japan studying kanji, the written characters in which a small number of confident strokes carry a complete idea. The figures work at mural scale on the flank of a building and equally well at the size of a print, which is one reason the imagery has travelled so far beyond the streets where it began.

Hackney, the street, and the move indoors

He began painting in northeast London, particularly around Hackney and Shoreditch, and now paints murals across Europe, Asia and America. The practice has always been tied to an idea of community. He places the people who live around a wall at the centre of the work, and he devotes a large part of his time to restoring his own pieces in public space rather than letting them decay.

He has painted both unauthorised and commissioned work, and has collaborated with organisations including Amnesty International, British Waterways and Reclaim the Streets, as well as running funded graffiti workshops. His first solo gallery show came in 2011, at Imitate Modern in the West End of London. His circumstances at that moment were precarious: he was living in a hostel for homeless people run by St Mungo's as he prepared for it.

In 2012 he worked in Dulwich, in southeast London, with the curator Ingrid Beazley, recreating Old Master paintings from the collection of Dulwich Picture Gallery in his own reduced language. That project drew other street artists into the area and seeded what became an outdoor gallery of street art around Dulwich. He has also given away poster copies of his work through The Big Issue, the magazine sold by homeless vendors, a gesture consistent with how he has treated distribution throughout his career.

Sculpture, public sites and the market

His work has moved into permanent public sculpture. Holding Hands was installed in Hoxton Square in London in 2020. At the entrance to the Migration Museum in Lewisham Shopping Centre stands Wall, made from two panels of the former Berlin Wall, one painted by Stik and one by the French artist Thierry Noir.

His market has risen steeply alongside that public profile. In 2022 Children of the Fire, sprayed onto the garage door of a vegan community centre in Hackney in the aftermath of the London riots, sold at Bonhams in New Bond Street against the highest presale estimate the house had ever placed on the artist. It remains the clearest public benchmark for his unique work.

What a specialist examines

Because so much of the output exists as screenprints in published editions, the first questions on any Stik are format and edition. A specialist establishes whether a sheet is a signed and numbered impression from a stated edition, an artist proof, or an unsigned promotional poster, since these occupy very different levels. Colourway matters, as many images were released in several colour variants of differing scarcity.

Condition is examined closely. These are flat printed sheets on paper, so light fade, handling creases, pin holes and trimmed margins all bear on value. For works that originated on the street, provenance and the legitimacy of the removal from their original support are decisive and often difficult questions. Documentation from the artist or from the publisher strengthens any valuation considerably.
