The frame as a character

Andrew Scott, born in 1991, is an American artist known for what he and his galleries call his frame experiments. He draws, prints, and then attacks the result: glass is smashed to a precise pattern, moulding is burned or dented, string is threaded through the paper and looped over the top of the frame. The alterations are never random. Each is timed and placed so that the illustrated figure appears to have caused it. A boy with a slingshot fires and the glass cracks where the stone would have gone. A boxer throws a left hook and the pane gives way beneath it. A child holds a real string that runs out of the picture and ties to a drawn kite.

The effect is to turn the frame from a boundary into a participant. Scott has described the work as having a performance aspect, since what he shows the public is not the drawing process but the few alterations that bring the finished piece to life.

From Rochester to a global audience

Scott grew up in Fairport, near Rochester in New York State, and remains based in the Rochester area. He drew from childhood but returned to making art seriously only a couple of years before it found an audience, partly as a way of responding to political upheaval. Recognition then arrived very suddenly. In 2023 he began posting short videos of himself activating the finished pieces through controlled destruction, and the first of them passed a million views inside a week. A following of a few hundred became close to two hundred thousand within months, and the running total across platforms has since been counted in the billions of views.

The attention brought mainstream coverage on Good Morning America and ABC News, a collaboration with Manchester City Football Club, and private commissions. Scott, who calls himself an introvert, kept his day job through the first wave and said he wanted proof of staying power before treating the success as sustainable.

Exhibitions and editions

His gallery representation is with Stowe Gallery in the United Kingdom. An online solo show in 2023 sold out, and further solo presentations followed under the titles Breakthrough in 2023 and Frame of Mind in 2024. In 2026 the gallery presented the beyond collection, in which the drawn characters no longer merely interact with the frame but move past it altogether, pushing the canvas outside its standard confines.

Alongside unique works he issues editioned prints, generally giclee or screenprint on heavy etching or cotton rag paper, and these are frequently supplied with the frame alteration already carried out by hand, burned or broken or shattered to order. Recurring titles include Firework, Backfire, Homerun, Dig, Splash, Torn, Catch, Shattered and Hangtime, most of them naming an action rather than a subject.

Market

At auction Scott has traded almost exclusively in his editioned prints, and his record at LLB Auction in Luxembourg is unusually consistent: nearly every lot offered has sold, and the results cluster tightly around the low estimate. The one clear exception, a screenprint that ran well past its high estimate, remains his record at the house. This is the profile of an edition market rather than a market in unique works. Supply is regular, prices are predictable, and the buyer is generally paying for the image and the hand alteration rather than for rarity.
