## About Victor Vasarely

### Life and work

Victor Vasarely was a Hungarian French painter, sculptor and printmaker, born in 1906 in Pecs and dead in 1997 in Paris. He began medical studies in Budapest before turning to painting, studying at Sandor Bortnyik's private academy, a school modelled on the teaching methods of the Bauhaus. In 1930 he settled in Paris and worked for several years as a graphic designer in advertising, a trade that shaped his lifelong interest in geometric composition and repeated visual units. His first solo exhibition took place in 1944 at the Galerie Denise Rene in Paris, a gallery inaugurated with his own show and that represented him for decades afterward. Vasarely became the central figure of Op art, the postwar movement built on geometric abstraction and optical effect, and his work was included in the exhibition The Responsive Eye at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1965, which brought Op art to a wide public. In his later years he devoted himself to public and architectural integration of art, opening a museum under his own name in his birth city and inaugurating the Fondation Vasarely in Aix en Provence in 1976. A further museum opened in Budapest in 1987, built around a large body of work he donated to Hungary.

### Editions and unique works

Across a long career Vasarely worked in oil and acrylic on canvas or panel, in wood and metal reliefs, in sculpture, in tapestry, and in a very large number of serigraphs, offset prints and small multiples produced in signed and numbered editions. These categories do not sell alike. Unique paintings and reliefs from his mature Op art period draw significantly higher prices than his editions, since a serigraph or a small multiple, however carefully signed and numbered, remains one of many identical or near identical impressions rather than a single object. LLB Auction has, to date, sold mostly prints and editioned works by the artist rather than unique paintings, which places its results toward the accessible end of his market rather than the tier reserved for singular canvases and reliefs.

### What a specialist examines

A specialist looking at a work attributed to Vasarely starts with the signature and its placement, usually lower right on a painting or worked directly into the surface of a relief, and with the title or series name, since Vasarely reused certain forms and titles across long runs of related pieces. Dating relies on where a piece sits within his documented stylistic periods, from the early graphic and black and white years through to the mature Op art canvases and the later architectural reliefs. For a print or a multiple, the edition number, the paper or support, and any printer's or publisher's mark carry as much weight as the signature itself. Provenance and a documented exhibition history help place a work within a known collection or a recorded sale. Condition points differ by medium: paintings are checked for retouching and surface cracking, reliefs for damage to raised or metal elements, and prints for fading, foxing and trimming of the sheet. ### Market position

At auction, Vasarely's unique paintings and sculptural reliefs sell for far more than his editions. In December 2025 an enamelled lava relief titled Hommage a l'Hexagone sold at Artcurial in Paris for 125,780 euros. In May 2024 an oil on canvas titled Mulyt, dated 1973, sold at Bonhams for 85,590 US dollars. Two earlier paintings sold at Ketterer Kunst in Munich: a work titled ONDHO brought 225,000 euros in December 2021, and a work titled Niepes brought 68,750 euros in June 2021. By contrast, a painted wood relief multiple titled Eclipse Positif sold at Phillips in New York in April 2024 for 6,096 US dollars, a gap that illustrates how far editioned pieces sit below unique paintings and reliefs within the same market.

### Preparing a valuation request

A seller preparing to consign a work should gather any invoice or document tracing how the piece entered their collection, together with clear photographs of the front, the signature, and the verso. The exact medium, support and dimensions should be recorded precisely, since Vasarely worked in materials as different as canvas, wood, metal and glass. For a print or multiple, the edition number and any publisher's stamp should be photographed alongside the signature. A short condition report noting any restoration, cracking, fading or loss helps set realistic expectations before a sale. Exhibition history, past auction appearances, or a listing in a monograph on the artist all strengthen a valuation, as does any certificate or archive reference kept with the work.
