## About Takashi Murakami

### Life and work

Takashi Murakami is a Japanese artist born in Tokyo in 1962. He trained in nihonga, the traditional Japanese painting style, at Tokyo University of the Arts, where he completed a doctorate in 1993. In the 1990s he developed the Superflat theory, linking the flat picture plane of Edo period painting to the graphic surfaces of manga, anime and postwar Japanese commercial art. He founded the company Kaikai Kiki to produce his paintings, sculptures, prints and films and to support younger artists working in the same visual language. His curated exhibition Superflat opened at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles in 2001 and toured North America. His first retrospective opened at the same museum in 2007 before traveling to the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. In 2010 he filled rooms of the Palace of Versailles with his sculptures and paintings, and in 2015 the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo presented The 500 Arhats, a monumental painted response to the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. A further museum survey, MURAKAMI vs MURAKAMI, opened at Tai Kwun in Hong Kong in 2019, and the Mori Art Museum included him again in its STARS exhibition in 2020.

### Editions and unique works

Murakami's output spans several markets that behave differently at auction. Paintings and cast or fabricated sculptures, often produced in small runs through Kaikai Kiki, sit at the top of the market. Multiples such as offset lithographs, vinyl figures and skateboard decks are issued in much larger runs and sell for far less than a unique or near unique piece from the same period. LLB Auction's own sales of this artist span sculpture and editioned works, which mirrors the spread seen at other houses. A buyer or seller should always establish which category a given piece belongs to before comparing it with a headline price, since a print and a sculpture sharing the same title and year can trade at very different levels.

### What a specialist examines

A specialist starts with the signature and any edition number, usually printed or hand written in the lower margin of a work on paper or on the base of a sculpture, and checks it against the format used for that series. Dating relies on the work's stated year, the exhibition or publication history attached to it, and any inscription on the reverse. Condition points differ by medium. Acrylic surfaces are checked for flaking or overcleaning, fiberglass and resin sculptures for stress cracks and paint loss, and prints for fading, foxing and handling creases. Provenance should trace back to an authorized dealer or to Kaikai Kiki itself, since the works are widely reproduced and unauthorized exhibitions of pieces attributed to Murakami have been reported in China. The body that lists and archives his edition works is named under Career, and a seller with any doubt about a print or edition should check it against that listing before consigning.

### Market position

At the houses named under Career, individual results for this artist have ranged widely by medium and date. Bonhams sold the sculpture Cherries for $529,575 in New York in 2022, and Phillips sold another cast of the same sculpture for HK$3,302,000 in Hong Kong in 2023. Phillips also sold the sculpture Together with the Flower Parent and Child for $762,000 in New York in 2024. At the other end of the market, Bonhams sold a signed and numbered print, Time Bokan, for $832 in an online sale in 2025, and Phillips sold a set of four signed lithographs for £3,810 in London the same year. Bonhams sold the print edition Flower Ball (3D) for £19,125 in an online sale closing in 2022. These results show a market that prices sculpture and painting far above prints and multiples from the same period.

### Preparing a valuation request

A seller should gather the original invoice or gallery receipt, any shipping documentation from Kaikai Kiki or an authorized dealer, and photographs of the signature, any edition number, and the reverse or base of the work. Exact dimensions, medium and edition size, when applicable, should be recorded, along with any archive number or exhibition history the piece carries. A condition report noting the state of the surface, any restoration and, for sculpture, the stability of the base and moving parts will speed up a valuation. Where a piece was bought through Kaikai Kiki or one of the dealers named under Career, keeping the original packaging and paperwork strengthens the provenance considerably.

## Career

### Cautions

- Editioned prints are issued in stated run sizes and are typically signed by hand and numbered on the sheet against that total, as recorded on a 2006 lithograph documented as edition of 300. (https://www.bonhams.com/auction/30925/lot/202/takashi-murakami-born-1962-time-bokan-black-moss-green/)
- The artist's own production company, Kaikai Kiki, separates prints, edition prints once sold as posters, and figures into distinct categories of edition works, each handled and priced differently from unique paintings and sculptures. (https://www.kaikaikiki.com/en/exhibitions/3591/)
- Unique sculptures such as cast fiberglass works are catalogued and sold as individual lots apart from editioned prints and multiples, and have realized far higher prices at auction than the artist's editions, as shown on house lot pages for single sculptures. (https://www.bonhams.com/auction/27624/lot/76/takashi-murakami-b-1962-cherries2005-c2005-takashi-murakamikaikai-kiki-co-ltd-all-rights-reserved/)
- Editions and multiples, such as offset lithographs and vinyl figures produced in large runs through Kaikai Kiki, trade at a small fraction of the artist's unique sculptures and paintings. A signed and numbered print sold for well under a thousand dollars at Bonhams in 2025, while a fiberglass sculpture from an earlier edition sold for more than half a million dollars at the same house in 2022. (https://www.bonhams.com/auction/30925/lot/202/takashi-murakami-born-1962-time-bokan-black-moss-green/)
- In 2018 unauthorized exhibitions displaying works attributed to Murakami and to Yayoi Kusama were staged in several Chinese cities, some charging admission. Murakami's representatives said he was unaware of the shows, considered the works counterfeit, and were preparing legal action. (https://hyperallergic.com/468009/yayoi-kusama-and-takashi-murakami-challenge-counterfeit-exhibitions-of-their-art-in-china/)
- Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd. is the entity that lists and archives Murakami's edition works and names his authorized dealers. A print or edition bought outside those channels should have its provenance checked against that listing before it is consigned.
