He studied illustration at the University of the West of England in Bristol. Cox began the practice as a child, covering his bedroom walls with a continuous black line drawing he called a doodle, and later extended the same visual language to canvas, sculpture, public walls and, between 2020 and 2022, his own home in Tenterden, Kent. His work is built from a single interlocking line of characters, eyes, creatures and invented forms that writers on his work have nicknamed graffiti spaghetti. From 2019 his paintings and works on paper moved through galleries and selling exhibitions in Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Wuhan, and in 2024 the Holburne Museum in Bath gave him his first solo exhibition inside a British museum, filling the building's walls, floor and ceiling with new doodle work developed from his sketchbooks. ### Disciplines and how they differ in the saleroom Mr. Doodle works across several distinct categories that the market treats differently. Unique paintings and drawings, made directly with marker pen, acrylic and spray paint, sit at the top of his output and have reached his highest recorded prices. Phillips sold an untitled 2017 work in acrylic and marker pen on board for 30,240 pounds at its 20th Century and Contemporary Art Day Sale in London in 2021. Press reporting recorded a large 2019 acrylic on canvas, sold at Tokyo Chuo Auction in 2020, realising 109,250,000 yen with fees. By contrast, his signed and numbered screenprints have traded in the low thousands of pounds at Bonhams and Phillips sales between 2021 and 2023, and a resin sculptural multiple sold at Bonhams for 51,000 Hong Kong dollars in 2021. These figures, together with the exhibition history at Sotheby's Hong Kong, Design Society and Pearl Lam Galleries in Shenzhen, and the Holburne Museum, show a documented public market across several price tiers and disciplines. ### Preparing a valuation request A seller should have the original invoice or gallery receipt ready, and, where the work is an edition, its printed edition number. Clear photographs of the front, the signature and the verso help establish condition and authorship, alongside the exact size and medium. Any record of exhibition history, such as inclusion in a gallery or museum show, or documentation issued at the point of sale, should be kept with the work.
