## About Eva Santer

### Practice

Eva Santer, born in 1988 in Belgium, is a contemporary painter whose work sits on the border between dream and waking. Her Paris gallery, LYNART STORE, places her in a Belgian surrealist lineage and names Rene Magritte as a direct point of reference, alongside a broader interest in metaphysics. The paintings are made with something close to photographic precision, and it is that precision which makes them strange: a scene rendered with such clarity, then quietly altered in scale or in lighting, stops looking like a record and starts looking like a proposition.

Her method is one of controlled disturbance. Light falls from where it should not. A figure is too small or too large for the space it occupies. A horizon sits at an unlikely height. Nothing is distorted for its own sake. The gallery describes works that question perception and subjectivity through plays of light, scale and contrast, and calls each picture a window onto a collective dream. The phrase is apt, because these are not private hallucinations but shared ones, assembled from thoroughly ordinary material: water, roads, mountains, weather and a solitary walker.

### Recurring subjects

Solitude is the constant. Her catalogued titles name a single figure again and again: Isolated Wanderer, The observer, Lone Guardian, The Watchful Silence. Where two figures appear, as in The Lovers, the pairing reads as the exception that measures the rule. The settings are elemental rather than specific. The Ocean's Silence and Echoes In Water turn on the surface of water and what it hides; The Summit and The Last Road on ascent and departure; The Divide on separation itself. Titles beginning with a definite article recur so persistently that they function almost as a signature, each one naming a condition rather than a place.

The work is made mostly in oil on canvas. Smaller square formats are issued as prints and editions through her gallery, and the auction catalogues also record pieces described simply as canvas or as painting. Scale is modest throughout, with the unique pictures typically square and under a metre.

### Market and reception

Santer came to wider notice through the saleroom rather than through institutional exhibition, and her gallery credits an auction at LLB Auction with marking her entry onto the international scene. She has been offered at that house in every sale season since her first appearance there, with about two thirds of her lots finding buyers. The unique canvases perform reliably and have closed above their high estimates on several occasions, with the strongest result going to a solitary figure subject. The small prints have been the weakest part of her market and have more often gone unsold, which is the usual pattern for a painter whose collectors want the surface and the scale rather than the image alone.

No results for the artist are recorded at other auction houses. Her primary market remains gallery based, through LYNART STORE in Paris, which offers both the unique canvases and the editions. For valuation purposes the auction record at a single house is therefore the whole of the public evidence, and it should be read as such.
